Montevideo: Espacio Libre Mártires Estudiantiles

Uruguay

ABOUT THE PROJECT

The site has become an important milestone for the development of one of the most emotional and multitudinous demonstrations in the city. The March of Silence begins in the Plaza de los Mártires Estudiantiles, which dialogues with the Memorial of the Disappeared of Latin America, located on the opposite sidewalk.

It is the meeting point, the axis that brings together the population to begin the march and therefore acquires a special dimension in the complex fabric of the city during the event. The city unfolds during it according to the message that citizens seek to deliver.

The proposal is framed in line with a small-scale intervention, where work is done on the pre-existing conditions, soil textures and light to achieve the physical composition of the site in coherence with the activities that arise from it.

The proposal is characterized by an austere organization of compositional elements where light and the pre-existing tree are the protagonists.
Just as silence operates on the border of the contrast between presence and absence, light is the element in charge of giving visibility to the names of the martyrs by illuminating the plaques.
